Itasca Cotton Manufacturing Company

Until 1900 all cottton grown in Texas had to be shipped to the East Coast to be processed.  Then, on March 6, 1900 the Itasca Cotton Manufacturing Company was formed.

This picture of James Ammons and his wife Johnnie was taken in front of the cotton mill in Itasca in 1911.  Low rent housing was available to employees with free water and sewage.  By 1920 electricity also became available.

The mill prospered during the two world wars.  But in the 50s the competition from synthetic fabrics
caused the mill to be closed.  It still stands today and is currently property of the city of Itasca TX.
